The Manassas Area

Located in Northern Virginia is the independent city of Manassas.  The city is rich in history with several historical sites.  It was the venue of two civil war battles - the First Battle of Mannassas (often referred to as the First Battle of Bull Run) and The Second Battle of Manasses (also called the Second Battle of Bull Run).  Manassas Junction, which remained in Union hands throughout most of the war and had valuable rails to Richmond, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and the Shenandoa Valley would become the town of Manassas.

Other historical sites include the Manassas Historic District (also known as Old Town Manassas) – made up of 206 buildings and residential structures dating as far back as the late 1800’s; the Cannon Branch Fort – a civil war era fort speculated to have been built by the Union Army in the 1860’s; Liberia – a 1820’s plantation home that was visited by presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis and other statesmen during the civil war; and the Jennie Dean Memorial Site – the site of a former private boarding school for African American children that was later converted to a public school in 1938.
